Video Poker, unlike slots, requires some skills and there are lots of strategies and charts to help you win big. The online casino team at African Betting Guide has taken a closer look at Video Poker and how to actually make money from it.

The History behind Video Poker

It might sound crazy, but the history of Video Poker begins all the way back in the 1800’s. Charles Fey, more known as the father of Slot Machines, invented the slot machine at the end of the 1800’s. As early as 1901, Charles Fey, experimented with different features on his invention and ended up adding the “Draw” feature.

This allowed some of the wheels in the slot machine to stay in place when pressing for a second spin, the feature was a hit and liked by slot enthusiasts. Early in the 1900’s, the Video Poker machine became more and more popular and Charles Fey was not alone in manufacturing this popular machine anymore.

Fast forward to the 1990’s, the internet arrived and the gambling industry made it’s the biggest transformation in centuries. Video Poker today is still based on the original way of playing it but has a lot of different versions such as Tens or Better, Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Double Bonus, Double Double Bonus, Bonus Poker and many more.

The Video Poker enthusiasts at African Betting Guide has made sure that the Online Casinos found on African Betting Guide offers safe banking options and superb Video Poker options.

How to play Video Poker

First of all, each Video Poker game shows it’s paytable when you enter the game, so it’s important that you choose a Video Poker slot that has good and high payouts for winning hands. In the majority of cases, you can select the number of coins/credits you’d like to bet as well as the value of the coins/credits according to the paytable.

For example, a paytable for Video Poker – Jacks or Better usually looks like this:

On the first row you can see the number 1 to 5, this is the number of coins you can play per hand. 1 being the lowest, pays out the lowest, 5 being the highest, pays out the highest.

In the columns, you can see how much a winning combination pays out. The lowest winning combination is a pair of Jacks or Better (hence the name). As long as you get a pair of Jacks, Queens, Kings or Ace you will get a payout.

The game starts with you being dealt 5 random cards and you can decide on which ones you’d like to keep and which ones you’d like to replace, but be careful as you only get your replacement cards once. You always want to aim to score at least a pair of Jacks, Queens, Kings or Ace, this way you at least get your stake back.

For example, you’re playing with 3 coins per hand and you end up with the following cards:

three of a kind poker

In your hand, you find three jacks and according to the paytable, 3 of a Kind pays out 9 coins for a wager of 3 coins. To put things in perspective, should you play with $1 per coin, your stake would be $3, the payout would be $9 and your profit would be $6.

As you can see on the paytable, a Royal Flush with 5 coins would pay out a whopping 4000 coins. The chances for that happening is quite slim, but not impossible as long as you have a strategy.
